While I firmly believe there are no accidents, there are some very close calls, especially when it comes to finding new places to eat. Case in point, The End Zone in Huntsville, Alabama.
While on the way to get my car worked on, I almost became a flatbed sandwich, as in my little car sandwiched between a right hand guard rail and a left side flatbed truck that was changing lanes. At a hair raising last second, in pouring rain, and inches from the guard rail, truck realized somebody was in line with his trailer hitch and and got back in his lane with only his mudflap tapping my front bumper. I was awake after that and never so happy to see the mechanic in my life. And after the bill later, he was glad to see me too. ;)
To calm the nerves and have lunch, I opted for the next door pizza place, which was closed. A little walking revealed a chain restaurant and a sports bar with a sign for wings. Welcome to The End Zone. Ding, we have a winner.
There was a good vibe in this place amongst the wall of dart boards, wall mounted TVs, and pool tables. The locals were friendly and were happy to suggest menu items. One, Lexus Matthews, (who wound up being an old high school mate) suggested the wings while another guy suggested the house Uncle Jessie Style BBQ sauce. The mild sauce (which is always a good place to start) was tangy and had just a little kick. The Uncle Jessie (which makes me think Dukes of Hazzard) was a very smooth smokey flavor with a bit more kick than the mild. There's really no other way to describe it. Both just had good flavors that were balanced, pleasing, and not haphazardly overpowering. In talking with one of the cooks, it was good to find out they value flavor with heat instead of just heat for bragging rights sake. Heartily agreed there.
Had a great time talking with folks, eating wings, and passing time on a rainy afternoon.
Thanks to Amber for taking good care of me, Lexus Matthews and company for the good suggestions, and to The End Zone for one of the best plates of wings I've had in some time. Glad to stop by whenever I'm in town. Cheers all! :)
