2009 ConNooga_Lloyd Kaufman Interview Update

Dropping the ball, technically speaking, on Mr. Kaufman's interview, not only lost some very funny moments, but also lost a very important message he wished to deliver. A message very dear to his heart. The following is taken from an email he was kind enough to send:

"Independent art and commerce is in great peril. Please post this urgent message in as many places on the internet as possible. Keep independent art and information in the hands of the people! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkWHUNsjlSY)

Thanks a lot.

Meet Otto Von Clank

Otto Von Clank is my Bavarian alter ego in the Steampunk world. Part man, part steam powered machine, he is a former member of the A.S. Revenger under the helm of Captain Tomas Quin. Otto is also the former experimental platform of Professor Phinius Phalin, his rebuilder. (Photo courtesy of Brooke Fox.)

Mr. Von Clank came to be after an unfortunate lunch time boiler accident. The man tries to heat up a sandwich and the boiler goes boom. Wadda mess! Thankfully the esteamed Professor Phalin put Otto back together, however, there were even more screws loose than before. Aside from the jolting headaches associated with an occasional reset (or mixing anti-freeze with 10w-30, a rather bad habit). He does have to be reminded of his surroundings now and then, since the reset also erases his short term memory capacitors. This particular "feature" seldom works in Otto's favor.

Otto left the A.S. Revenger in early 2009 for adventures unknown and to further his cybernetic enhancements. He is also discovering various genetic enhancements/experiments by the good Professor Phalin.

Otto is a gentleman, humorist, adventurer, and happy-go-lucky soul with a variety influences:

  • Artie Johnson (Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In)
  • DiVine (The Gaylord Opryland stilt walker)
  • Yahoo Serious (Young Einstein)
  • Caterpiller J-5000 Power Loader (Aliens)
  • Dr. Otto Octavious (Marvel's Dr. Octopus)
  • Johan Krauss (Hellboy 2) *Thanks for the catch, Brook. :)
  • The Marx Brothers
  • Mel Brooks
  • Kat Von D
  • Elvira
  • Bunson and Beaker (Jim Henson's Muppets)

2009 ConNooga

This past weekend, I headed up to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the 2nd annual ConNooga Sci-Fi/Fantasy convention. I once again assumed my Steampunk role as Otto Von Clank, the A.S. Revenger’s Bavarian steamborg engineer and humorist. Time once again for adventures unknown…and comedy. (Steampunk group photo courtesy of Basil Kittrell)

The trip started late Friday night about 11:15 pm. While Professor Phalin and I picked up Oliver Skyline, the Revenger’s Naviguesser, we realized the truck’s tailgate had been down during the cross-town drive. Miraculously, no gear lost. One Naviguesser, a WELL secured tailgate, and about 2 hours later, we met up with Captain Quinn in Chattanooga. It should be noted that the good Captain’s work does require a non-descript, white cargo van, with few windows, from time to time. We immediately inquired about Free Candy and the jokes only got worse from there. We drug our slap happy arse’s into the hotel still crying from laughing so hard (at 2:30 am local time), with the Captain just shaking his head in disgust.

After not getting to sleep until 4:30 am, we painfully crawled out of bed at 9 am for clean up and a quick breakfast at McDonald’s. Keep in mind, we’re in full Steampunk regalia and we’re getting more than a few looks from the bewildered locals.

We breezed through con registration at The Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel lobby, and immediately reconed the dealer room for sundries and prizes. Not five minutes in the door, and already a photo op request. A good sign and we were delighted to accommodate. This would be one of many throughout the day, which made us all feel great! We then split off into groups to peruse the goodies being sold and chat with the guests and booth vendors. Here are some notables I had the pleasure of talking with:
  • Patricia Albrecht (www.myspace.com/patriciaalice) and Samantha Newark (www.myspace.com/samalasmusic) - Better known as Pizzazz and Jem from the 80’s cartoon show, these two nice ladies have wide and varied experience throughout the entertainment world. Ms. Albrecht is a poet and writer as well as music business supporter. Ms. Newark is an established singer/song writer with a new self-titled album out. She even performed with Chase Masterson during the convention.

  • Ok, story time. Originally I was going to post a "look who'll be at ConNooga" and end it with the "It's Showtime Synergy!" tag line from the Jem TV show. Just didn't have time to do it. Got to con and told this story to Ms. Albrecht and Ms. Newark, who both got a chuckle out of it. Later, both ladies kindly autographed pictures, but it wasn't until I got back to the hotel Saturday night, that I read them. Ms. Newark used the same tag line in the autograph! It was a good laugh and well played. Oh, and I’ve had that theme song stuck in my head since Sunday, after YouTubing the first espisode of the show. Truly outrageous!

  • Chase Masterson (http://www.chasemasterson.com/) - While known for her work on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Ms. Masterson is another nice lady with varied creative projects in the works. She performed with Samantha Newark during ConNooga, and screened her Sci-Fi Noir film “Yesterday Was a Lie”, which won 10 Best Feature awards, at the con as well. More info on the film can be found at http://www.yesterdaywasalie.com/.

  • Fandom Calendar 2009 Models – Jamie, aka Ms. November, has a Steampunk photo shoot in the works and Amberetta (http://www.amberetta.com/) will be in a production of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues.

  • Convention Vixens (http://www.convixens.com/) – Had a chance to interviewed Lyric (also an accomplished belly dancer) who gave a little history on the group, and met one of its newest members in her Neko (cat girl) persona. Got to talk with Hypnotic and did briefly see Yaya Han just as we were headed out Sunday morning.

  • Lloyd Kaufman (President of Troma Entertainment and Chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance) - Mr. Kaufman, of the Toxic Avenger fame, graciously took time out of his busy schedule for a brief (and my very first) interview. He humorously plugged his latest movie, “Poultrygeist” and his new book “Direct Your Own Damn Movie!”. Troma is also celebrating 35 years in the biz.

  • Grapevine Fires (http://www.grapevinefires.com/) was one of many fun vendors to talk with, but what sets them apart are their Brain Slugs. Yes! If you’re a Futurama fan and you’ve ever wanted one, here you go!

Amidst all this mirth, my camcorder was a bad little monkey, taking blurry at best pictures most of the time. Luckily, the Professor had his shiny new Canon SLR, and saved the bacon on more than a few occasions. Despite this, I lost several photo ops and the camera ate the video interview footage of Lloyd Kaufman and garbled Lyric’s interview footage. Yes, the two best parts went kaput. Go figure.

Regardless, the Revenger crew joined some of Professor Sid’s Steampunk crew for more photo ops around the trains between the hotel lobby and dealer room. The mild temperatures and sunny sky made great backdrop for the group shots. Yep, more requests from curious onlookers, more hamming it up, and we loved it all. We just had fun with the random folks and the feedback we received was positive, along with a few laughs.

Fast forward to some much needed break and food time in the evening, then it was time to head back to con for the night-time festivities. After more milling and chatting and general catching up with friends old and new, it was time for Drum Circle. If you’ve never been, imagine a ring of drummers with a handful of them leading the beat on various size hand-drums, and belly dancers in the center of the circle. Truly a fun and spiritual experience for participants and onlookers. My musical side kicked in and I had to give drumming a try, even if I was a newbie. What fun! After picking up the rhythm, a handful of us total strangers got on the same wavelength. The grins were big, and comradery filled the air while the belly dancers were a beautiful sight to behold. (On a comical side note, Lyric from Convention Vixens was dancing right in front of me during the circle, but I didn’t realize it was her until the next day. The password is DENSE!) There was even a point where I got to lead with the base beat while head banging too. And yes, in true Dwarven fashion, I did play the drum with my head a couple times. Yes, with my HEAD. (looks around) EAT DRUMS!! EAT DRUMS!!

Yes friends, a memorable and epic adventure. Special thanks once again to all the great folks who took time to chat, do interviews, and pose for pictures. Also a big thank you to those who asked the same of the Revenger crew. We really appreciated it! And finally, thank you to my fellow crew members for a really fun trip. Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this!

ConNooga Update coming soon.

Lotsa sorting and writing this week after a fantastic time at ConNooga. As soon as all the materials are in and edited, full story will follow. Pictured are Patricia Albrecht and Samantha Newark (two very nice ladies), the voice talents of Pizzazz (of The Misfits) and Jem (of Jem and the Holograms). Yes, the very same 80's cartoon show. Stay tuned and..."It's Showtime Synergy!" (Oh yeah, I went there.) ;)

Blogging Buffet & Nerdly News

Time once again for a round robin of wry ramblings, rarely remiss of humor.
  • First off congratulations and good luck to Pat McCabe (A Walk In The Park Podcast) on his upcoming move to Orlando Florida. May the lines be short, the Dole Whip fresh, and the beer plentiful, especially at "Beer:30". Kungaloosh my friend and safe journey!
  • I'm on iTunes restriction for a while. Just too much good music...and temptation. Also staying away from the cheap 80's rock cds at Walmart. Anybody seen my Aquanet?
  • Trying to avoid creating a MySpace or Facebook account. Lotsa good people on both, but it's one more thing to take care of. Gut says this is a losing fight. Greeeaaat.......
  • FINALLY found Catwoman (with Halle Berry) on DVD. Despite the cheese moments, I enjoyed it. You could pick out some of the Witchblade, Stargate and Mummy influences in the backstory, but it was fun for a super hero (or villain) movie. Thought of a few Neko friends on Second Life as I watched. Hi to Tikki, Myst, Crysala, Suzaku, and co. =^.^=
  • Number 2 mod bar stool was aquired last weekend. Yep my Real Life apartment is edging closer to my Second Life apartment. Now if my hair was just as long as my avatar's and I had his washboard abs. Gotta work on those.
  • Bought an external frame pack for project, but ended up liking it too much to modify it. Guess I'm well set for travel gear, and yes, it's green. Big surprise, right?
  • Added a few buttons, magnets, and a lanyard from the US Space and Rocket Center and Huntsville Botanical Gardens recently. These are the souvenirs that I like to collect on adventures because they travel well, among other things.
  • Booo to this week's cold snap! Stilt walking must and will have it's time. Bring on Spring!
  • The Airship Revenger and her Steampunk crew set sail for Chattanooga this Saturday, Feb. 21st, for Con Nooga (http://www.connooga.com/1901.html). Uh huh, 4 single guys on a weekend road trip. This can't be good. ;) Pics and stories to follow.

You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll

It's 4:30 in the morning. Def Leppard's Rocket is blaring in my ears and I'm wide awake thanks to Whoppers, Bottlecaps, and Cookie Dough bites. Yep, I've been up all night listening to music on iTunes...and quoting Twisted Sister.

In the past few months, there's been an unlikely chain of events leading up to this all-nighter and a resurgence of music in my life. Where it's headed is a mystery, but I'm loving the journey with old bands that are more like old friends.

Here's the short back story. I was a keyboardist and guitarist in high school and college. Wanted to be a rock star. Went to a music college for a music business degree. Failed out. Had some ups and downs, got lazy, and quit playing. Didn't really dig the music scene of the late 90's up to present either. Eventually sold my guitars and gear after a couple failed returns that didn't even last a week. It was just time to retire and move on.

After getting on Second Life last summer, I stumbled into Club Paradox late in the year. Here was a club of like minded souls who also loved 80's rock, hair metal, and the like. And so it became a home.

The next step in the path was my buddies Jake and Luke getting me into Rock Band. The game brought back some old and good feelings from tunes long forgotten. It was like being back home with my favorite music, just in a new package. It also exposed me to some other music and bands I wouldn't have bothered with years ago. Got me looking at guitars again...just for fun.

Also during this time, I've been growing my hair long and downloading all kinds of rock from iTunes. Everybody from Motorhead to Cinderella reminded me of albums I used to have. The fur on the neck stood up once again while the eyes flared and the adrenaline surged. Man what a great feeling!

Even LA Ink and the exploits and influences of Kat Von D have sparked a new interest in music. Reading up recently on my favorite band, Firehouse, poured more gas on the blaze.

All this has really made me miss playing...BAD! BUT, I have to wonder, where this all leads and if this isn't just another flash in the pan interest that will fizzle like bad hairspray three songs into a show. Also, my energy is so divided anyway between theme park stuff, steam punk stuff, stilt walking, that I don't want to take on something, invest in some gear, and not follow through. The idea is to focus on SOMETHING or a couple things, and follow through.

Even so, music is calling. Hell, it's practically beating down the door!

The Digital Life?! Part 6 _Say Hahlo to My Little Friend!

As most of you know, my Gateway laptop of 2 years and great service went kapuht earlier this week. Replacing it was going to have to wait a while, since I need to focus on other stuff right now. Then I found the Acer Netbook. Something said this was an ideal time to try out one of these new machines. Besides, small tech and gadgets are ALWAYS cool in my book. ;) (How long 'til that Cobalt pocket watch/pda/cellphone thing comes out again?)

The Acer does a good job. Yes, the small keyboard takes some getting used to and yes, you'll probably want an external DVD drive for it. I like the 2 SD card slots for expansion and it's great for iTunes (Yes! I can finally catch up on LA Ink!). It even runs MS Flight Simulator 2002 pretty well on the high settings. Not bad at all for a machine not designed for gaming. Yes, Second Life is pretty slow, even with what appear to be dual core 1.6ghz processors. No worries, this thing covers all the truly necessary things VERY well. I can't complain, since it saved the bacon here. Acer even includes a travel-sized optical mouse with this multi-tasker.

And I just realized the humor in a theme park enthusiast buying an Acer computer. (ACErs are members of the American Coaster Enthusiasts group [http://www.aceonline.org/] and completely unrelated to Acer Co. Ltd. [http://us.acer.com/acer/home.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&sp=page2&ctx2.c2att1=0&CountryISOCtxParam=US&ctx1g.c2att92=453&acond24=25&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=4168717908] that makes computers.)

On a random side note, my first PC in 1996 or 1997 was an emerald green Acer Aspire pizza box with voice recognition. It also was one of the early machines to sport an AMD processor verses a Pentium. This was also just before or right about the time Celeron processors hit the computing scene. The Acer monitor from that set lasted until around 2004 or so. Long time for any monitor, let alone one that survived a couple moves.

Here are the particulars on the Aspire One Netbook:

  • 1.6 ghz processor(s)
  • 1 gig ram
  • 160 gig hard drive (about 140 after system resources and recoverypartition)
  • Win XP SP3
  • Generic and just enough graphics card? (nothing raging)
  • 8.9 TFT-LCD screen (most bright and sharp)
  • 3 USB 2.0 ports
  • 1 multiple type memory card slot
  • 1 SD slot (Basically 2 SD slots)
  • VGA out
  • Headphones out, mic in
  • Ethernet and Wireless B/G networking
  • Webcam
  • MS Works
  • MS Office 2007 60 day trial
  • McAffee Anti Virus trial
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader* A Windows DVD player/MPEG support
  • Win Media Player

At the end of the day, I'm just bloody relieved to have a working computer and back-up system.

New Computer Aquired

I'm getting everything migrated/set up on the new Acer Netbook over the next couple days. So far so good and pleasently surprised. Thanks for the patience and details soon. Hope everybody has a good Friday. Happy Valentine's Day too.

My plans for happy heart day? I have a date with well worn quadrupelets. Yep, getting tires replaced. ;)

The Digital Life?! Part 5 _The Techno Revolt Is On

First off, this picture of my Smoky Mountains WATERMELON flashlight is hopefully a humorous reminder to the In The Loop guys to stay on topic when possible. Great show this week and enjoyed Mike Collins and TL Brown, as well as Pat, Clint and Will. Last weeks Stripper show was also most Enlightened. ;)

Now for the Techno Revolt of 2009. My computer headset died 2 weeks ago. Today, my bluetooth headset AND my laptop are DOA. This means no Second Life or iTunes for the next few weeks until I can get another computer. Blogging, email, and AIM are still a go thanks to Blackberry. My last backup was 2 weeks ago to the Blueberry portable drive. Yep, lotsa berries in my life...especially today's raspberries from all the defunct gear.

To my SL friends, just pass the word and I'll just see you all as soon as I can.

Oi vey and will keep you all posted. Yeah, my gear got jokes!

Stilt Walking Update

It's a gorgeous and sunny Saturday here in Huntsville, and that means....Stilt Time!

Got up and moving for the 4th time today for about an hour and a half on the drywall stilts. With the new "training wheels", aka walking poles, I felt much better lumbering about. Balance is getting better and the endurance is building. Now that I'm back on track with Luke's weekly workouts and spare time strength excercises, things should progress more quickly.

For the curious, the drywall stilts are 2 feet tall at their lowest setting and 4 feet at the highest. Yep, 2 feet is plenty! At 5'10", I'm a short guy, but with stilts on, I'm almost 8 feet tall! It's a pretty cool view.

Best part of today's test run was getting outside the apartment for a bit to navigate steps, slopes, and getting in and out of doors. It's REALLY FUN and I can't wait to walk more as the weather warms up!

U.S. Space and Rocket Center

Stopped into the gift shop after work today and thought I'd snap a pic. Hope you all enjoy!

Blogging Buffet & Nerdly News

It's video game stuff, a new Steampunk creation, and coaster ramblings in this installment. Enjoy!
  • My friends Luke and Jake have really gotten into Rock Band. I mean REALLY. Guess who else got hooked? Since my buddy Steve in Kansas had already gotten me into Guitar Hero uno and dos over a year ago (has it been that long?), the dust shook off pretty quick. I have no mad skills and rock timid and meekly on easy, but it's fun. Even sang Duran Duran's Hungry Like the Wolf. Though I got a flawless (on easy) my first time ever singing in the game, and I do have prior music training, a singer, I am not. Oh, I can really wail, I just can't sing. Karoke? Forget it! ;)
  • Reinstalled Flight Simulator 2002 in my laptop this past weekend. FSX just barely runs on my 1.8 ghz single processor machine, so 2002 is the next option. Even so, nice to have some helo time over Orlando Florida using the real-time weather data. Translated: If it's 65 and sunny in Orlando, it'll be 65 and sunny in your game. Hmm...gotta find blimps/airships to add on. All the better for buzzing Magic Kingdom and Epcot. (For the literal among us, buzzing ok in game. Buzzing not ok in Real Life.)
  • Got a Mio 500 GPS as great surprise from the folks the weekend before last. Finally got it programmed and tested it out Saturday night. The British female voice setting was a must. Was hoping for an Aussie voice, but didn't see one just yet. Either way, it'll be nice to have an international companion saying "You're doing it wrong!" while I'm traveling the "motorway" this summer. As a side note to my Brit friends, I'm not totally daft. I DO know what "proper football" is after all. ;)
  • In the quiet time on Sunday, creativity called and I fashioned another Steampunk gear necklace out of leftover parts. It'll go well with the antique store gas masked I picked up last week. Also modded a set of welder's goggles with some parts for the fun of it. Brilliant!
  • Track work for King's Island's new Diamondback is done, finishing, oddly enough, on my birthday, January 26th. Very cool, especially since I'm a fan of B&M Hypers. Can't ride them because of the motion sick thing, but still love them. Hoping to see Diamondback either this summer or next.
  • Track work is also done on Sea World Orlando's Manta. Now it's down to décor, themeing and fishies. Kudos for routing it over the walkways akin to Alton Towers' Air, another B&M flyer.
  • Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit is ripping along. The posters over at ThemeParkReview who've seen it in person say it towers over Universal Orlando...and that's just the mid-course breaks! Honestly, I was meh about this whole coaster, but now that it's taking shape, I like the idea more, and think it adds a lot to USO. Granted, I'd hoped for a Hollywood Dream (B&M Mini Hyper) clone, like at Universal Japan, but R3 seems to deliver just as much visual punch. It also gives more of an individuality to the park, even if the idea of having an attention grabbing coaster is the same as USJ.
  • While it's still very much rumor, I would like see Carowinds get a B&M Hyper in 2010, simply because it would add a lot to the park. Naturally time will tell, but still a fun thought.
  • Yes, that is a new banner at the top of the page. Like some songs need more cowbell, a Rapids Blog needs, well, more Rapids. The pics, from left to right, are of Roman Rapids at Busch Gardens WhateverIt'sCalledThisWeek, The Dollywood Express, and Alabama Adventure's (or Visionland's) Wild River Gorge.
